The name "plasma TV" has become cultural shorthand for the type of large, flat-screen televisions on the hawk since the late 1990s, but many are not plasma-based technology at all.

Devices on the market include everything from plasma to LCD (liquid crystal magnificence) and its major sub-model, the backlit LED (light emitting diode) televisions.

Plasma TVs are significantly more advanced than the humble cathode ray tube television sets many of us grew up with, but they allowance a common feature -- glass screens.

These screens are easy to keep clean, but some older models are disposed to what is known as "screen burn" -- when the outline of a static graven image or words remains on a screen when the pixels displaying them burn out from over-use.
