Sharper, lighter big-screen TVs coming

LAS VEGAS — As always, last week’s Consumer Electronics Show, the life’s largest personal-technology confab, was filled with hundreds of new TVs.

There were so many announcements that it might be difficult to keep up with them if you’re looking to CES to aide you choose your next TV set.

A primer to help you cut through the noise:

OLED and 4K TVs: LG Electronics, the South Korean electronics-maker, unveiled a 55-inch OLED TV that is only 3/16 of an inch thick, and a enormous 84-inch TV with 4K-display resolution. What are OLED and 4K?

OLED, or organic light-emitting diodes, are more verve-efficient, are thinner and provide better black levels when compared with standard LEDs employed in TVs already on the market. LG’s 55-inch OLED TV weighed in at just less than 17 pounds.

But OLED is also more costly to bring to light than LED TVs, which means consumers will have to pay more for OLED sets.
