When the first at-residence 3D TVs were breathlessly introduced by its manufacturers, industry watchers might have written them off as a gimmick. But a couple of years and several improved incarnations later, your common mancave-dweller may be asking: "Is watching shrapnel launch out of the screen at my head during my favourite exertion flick right for me?"
The technology is certainly still expensive, but comes as a feature in many of today's top-of-the-hawser TVs. From there, you can select your viewing experience from two main types. In "active" 3D sets, the lenses in your 3D glasses dim, red to right and back again, at a fraction of a second, in sync with your TV. With "passive" technology, polarized lenses obstruct out different kinds of light emitted by the TV, so your eyes each get a different picture, creating the sensation of depth. There are arguments for both, but the consensus seems to be that passive TVs, with their dimmer viewing experience and inexpensive, reveal-bones glasses, might make for a more comfortable viewing experience, while the picture-obsessed bend toward active technology.
