Panasonic posts record loss as screen and TV sales tumble
Electronics leviathan Panasonic ( NYSE:PC ) has posted the largest annual loss in its history as sales of televisions, plasma screens and portable phones stalled and restructuring costs soared.
For the year to March, sales dropped by 10 per cent to Y7,846 billion, while net losses soared to Y772 billion (US$9.7 billion) after restructuring costs of Y767 billion.
The Japanese undeviating lost Y438.4 billion (US$5.5 billion) in the last three months with weak sales of insipid-panel TVs, mobile phones and digital cameras all blamed for the decline.
Panasonic’s losses reinforce similar poor numbers from rival Sony , which was also hit by poor TV and smartphone sales.
Like its aristocrat, Panasonic said the results were affected by the Japanese earthquake and Tsunami and also the widespread flooding in Thailand.
Panasonic launched a happy-wide reorganisation in January this year that included listed subsidiaries Panasonic Stimulating and Sanyo becoming wholly-owned parts of the group again.
