Bid on a Mystery at Storage Unit Auctions
Once a month in Ellicott Urban district, anyone can bid on a roomful of mystery.
It may be one person's forgotten junk, or the valuables of someone down on their luck, unable to retake them.
Once a month, self storage units at Ellicott City Self Storage are up for auction. And more and more, would-be buyers are lining up to take a keek inside and place a bid on someone else's stuff. More than a dozen people attended Tuesday's auction.
Here’s how it works: Someone falls behind on payments on a storage unit. After three months, the unit is put up for auction. The renters have knowledge of that this is the procedure; it’s outlined in the rental agreement.
The renter has until the minute of the auction to pay up, but if they don't, anyone can sign up to bid on the contents of the sinful storage unit.
On the last Tuesday of each month, auctioneer Frank Russo sells off goods in Ellicott Bishopric, Baltimore and Eldersburg self storage units. On the last Wednesday he's in Timonium and Baltimore, where anything goes.
