The 'Ooooh, Ahhhh' Factor from HDTVs Lit Up CES

As in the erstwhile few years, crowds gathered at the 2012 International CES to gawk at large flat panel displays. This however, new technologies such as OLED displays took center stage. But while OLEDs, Crystal LEDs, and 4K or higher displays got most of the notice, it's likely that Internet connectivity and built-in "smart" apps will drive high-end sales this year.

Still, there's no denying that the 55-inch OLED displays shown by LG and Samsung were extremely impressive. Both products drew huge crowds.

LG's offering is a unique design, based on a new manufacturing dispose of called Oxide TFT, which it disclosed last year. The process uses white biological LEDs with a color filter, providing a bright picture.

Most remarkably, the suite says the 55-inch display weighs just 16.7 pounds.

Meanwhile, Samsung also introduced a 55-inch full matrix OLED display. The company noted that it is using more traditional RGB color patterning, which suggests it has made occurring in producing good color for each of the LEDs on a large-screen. Samsung didn't furnish much in the way of detail, so it's unclear if the company still uses the same Low-Temperature Polysilicon (LTPS) process employed in the in Britain artistry of the smaller AMOLEDs for smartphones and tablets.
